What is Ethics?

Ethics is a framework of moral principles and standards that a society places upon itself to guide
human choices, behaviour, and conduct. At its core, it is the philosophy of human conduct,
asking one fundamental question: what is right and what is wrong?
However, ethics is often confused with three things it is not.

  • Personal Feelings: A mob lynching a thief may feel justified. That feeling does not make the
    act ethical.
  • Social popularity: For centuries, slavery was widely practised and socially accepted across
civilisations. Acceptance, however, never made it right.
  • Laws: Pre-independence laws were legally valid but morally oppressive, forcing citizens to
    protest against them.
